John E. Reid & Associates
"When asked which vendors they rely on most for building
their own skills and that of staff, a whopping 80% of
security pros cited John E. Reid and Associates." (Dec.
2002 IOMA Security Director's Report)
John E. Reid
and Associates, Inc. were established by John Reid in
1947. Their primary business was to provide detection of
deception services, almost exclusively through the
administration of polygraph examinations. As the years
progress they developed an expertise in the identification
of truth and deception from verbal and non-verbal behavior
symptoms displayed by a subject during a non-accusatory
interview. Their business expanded to offer detection of
deception services through the Integrity Interview,
Behavior Analysis Interview, as well as polygraph
technique. Their services are retained by business, law
enforcement agencies, government organizations and the
judiciary.
In 1974 they
began to offer training program on interviewing and
interrogation techniques for professional investors from
business, government and law enforcement agencies. Their
programs have expanded to include seminars on
pre-employment screening interviews; interviewing
techniques for child abuse investigators; and, seminars
for gang crime investigators. Today they conduct in excess
of 350 training seminars a year.
In 1983 they
introduced their pre-employment interviewing training
seminar which is now called Hiring the Best:
Applicant Interviewing Techniques and Strategies.
Their
expertise on the topic of behavior symptoms analysis,
interviewing and interrogation techniques was recognized
by the National Security Agencies which awarded John E.
Reid and Associates a sole source bid for a scientific
study on the use of behavior symptoms in the detection of
deception, and by the U.S. Supreme Court which referenced
their text book, Criminal Interrogation and Confessions,
in making their decision in the case Stansbury v.
California (1994). In the case
Missouri v.
Seibert (2004) the U.S. Supreme Court specifically
referenced their company (and their textbook) as a “law
enforcement educator” that properly teaches the
application of the Miranda warnings.
